Understanding Diagnostic Tests

Your vehicle is a complex assembly of interconnected systems. Through the use of cutting-edge diagnostic tools that connect directly to your vehicle, our techs can use engine codes pulled from your vehicle's computer systems to help pinpoint specific systems that are being affected. This is where the expertise of our certified technicians comes in to know where to start executing necessary pinpoint testing to track down the underlying issue.

Decoding the Alerts

Each engine code provides a snapshot of your car’s health, and although they do not say exactly what repairs need to be done, these codes act as clues for our technicians to see what locations these codes are coming from to give them a better idea of where to start looking and what pinpoint tests to perform:

  • P (Powertrain Codes): Issues with engine or transmission functions.
    • Common Issues: Engine misfires, emissions problems, fuel inefficiency, and transmission shifting issues.
  • B (Body Codes): Problems related to airbags, lighting, or climate control systems.
    • Common Issues: Faults in the airbag system, malfunctions in seat controls, issues with the central locking system, and lighting system failures.
  • C (Chassis Codes): Alerts from the electronic suspension or steering systems.
    • Common Issues: Problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control, steering response faults, and suspension system failures.
  • U (Network Communication Codes): Communication errors within the vehicle’s network.
    • Common Issues: Faults in the communication between the vehicle’s engine control unit and other control modules, problems with data sharing between devices, and issues in the controller area network (CAN).

Understanding these codes helps our technicians recommend precise repairs tailored to your vehicle’s needs, ultimately avoiding unnecessary repairs.
