4 Things to Know About Your Car’s Brakes
Brakes are one of your vehicle’s most important safety features, allowing you to come to a complete and safe stop. As long as they are working, drivers do not typically worry about the ins and outs of the braking system. That said, it is important to understand what these systems consist of, as they can help you identify potential problems. As a leading service provider in the Denver area, Urban Autocare is here to teach you four things you should know about your car’s brakes!
If you need any help with your current brakes, contact us today to book an appointment.

Disc Brakes vs Drum Brakes
Disc and drum brakes are two of the most commonly seen brakes on vehicles. That said, disc brakes tend to be the better option as they are most often used on modern cars. This type of brake is more efficient at stopping a vehicle quickly, which is highly important for emergencies.

Brake System Components
Your braking system is made up of numerous components that all work together as a unit to stop your vehicle. These components consist of:
- Hydraulic brake fluid housed in the master cylinder
- The master cylinder connects to brake lines, which connect to the brake caliper on each wheel
- Once you press your brake pedal, fluid is transferred into the brake lines, towards the brake pistons within each caliper
- When fluid is pushed against the pistons, it extends and pushes against the brake pad, which grips the brake rotors, bringing the wheels to a stop

Boosting System
The pressure from your foot to the brake pedal is not enough to bring your vehicle to a stop. Your car uses a boosting system to multiply the force of your foot onto the brake, as this is the only way to stop your vehicle safely.

Anti-Lock Braking System
When road conditions are rough, your vehicle’s ABS safety features will identify when a wheel locks up, reducing the pressure on that wheel so that it keeps spinning. This is especially important on slick roads, and it should always be a feature that you maintain well!
