Know Your Car’s Brakes

Anxiety is usually a side-effect of driving on snowy roads in Denver. Not only do we all tend to grip the wheel so tight that we end up with white knuckles, but we tend to hold our breathe and hope for the best, well at least I do. One of the best ways to know that you’re driving safely in the snow is to just that, know how to drive in the snow! If you’ve been following our previous blog posts, then you already know that driving at slower speeds with enough spacing between you and the car in front of you is a must, and that accelerating and decelerating slowly is the best way to keep traction or regain it. However, there are more ways your winter driving can improve this year!

Know your Brakes!

It’s important that you know your brakes! Without brakes, you don’t have a fully functioning car. When this happens, there’s really nothing you can do to stop. So, to avoid losing control of your brakes by hitting ice, it’s important to know how they work on ice and snow. A great way to learn how they function in these conditions is by bringing them to an abandoned parking lot when the roads are full of snow and ice. Go ahead and accelerate and brake. Practice braking to see how well your brakes respond in these conditions, but remember not to get too out of control with your speeds.
